DAW (=Digital Audio Workstation) is the software used to record, edit and master music on the computer. There are countless software from the major manufacturers. To name just a few, here is a selection:
Garage Band from Apple
Logic pro from Apple
Cubase from Steinberg
Pro Tools from Avid
Reaper from Cockos
I don't want to go into the pros and cons of all the DAWs listed here, there are excellent comparisons on the web. If you google "test daw", the first thing that comes up is a good comparison that goes into detail about the individual DAWs.
Reaper from Cockos
When I was faced with the question of the right DAW years ago, I first looked at Reaper from Cockos, bought it and worked with it.

From my point of view, these are the advantages of Reaper:
runs on WINDOWS and MAC.
reasonable price (60 USD for semi-professional users)
very powerful in functions
very good documentation
there are different "skins" for the interface
Disadvantages are few
English operation
not for Linux
for MAC not really deeply integrated into the operating system
All in all a good software, for the price with outstanding price/performance ratio. For PCs, Reaper is one of the really good DAWs.
Logic Pro from Apple
Then, because of a recording project, I switched to Logic pro from Apple, since my bandmate was also using that. By its very nature, Logic pro only runs on Apple computers, which wasn't a problem for me since I work with Macs at home anyway.

What can I say - I was and am thrilled. The range of functions is insane. The integration of sound interfaces, sound modules, MIDI controllers, etc. works totally smoothly with Apple computers, it's really plug'n'play as a rule. For me the right choice.
From my point of view, these are the advantages of Logic Pro:
very stable
super integrated into the macOS operating system, easy integration of sound interfaces
reasonable price considering the range of functions (about 230 EUR)
very powerful functions
program and very good documentation in german
iPad can be used as remote control
about 7000 royalty-free loops
no copy protection - the Mac is the copy protection
Disadvantages are few
runs only on Apple machines with macOS, not for Linux or Windows
for MAC not really deeply integrated into the operating system
