Headphones for e-drums and drums

In my view, three things are crucial when it comes to headphones for electric drums:

  1. acoustic shielding from the environment this means how well the headphones shield the noise of the environment, so that you really only get the sound of the drum module on your ears. (Side note: At the same time, for acoustic drum sets, this also protects you from the noise of the drums and thus acts as hearing protection).

  2. Sound of the headphones

  3. Wearing comfort

Closed headphones clearly have a system advantage in the first point "acoustic decoupling from the environment. More expensive models usually have an advantage in terms of sound.

My top 3 are the following headphones:

1. Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250 Ohm

Pro headphones with excellent sound quality and good acoustic shielding

This model is a closed headphone from Beyerdynamic. My personal favorite for e-drumming, I use it for practicing on the e-drumset. This model is also very often seen in professional environments. Have seen him myself often in radio studios of Swiss Radio and Television (SRF).

Advantages

  • sensational sound, balanced and clear

  • good shielding from the environment due to the closed design

  • super price/performance ratio

  • good wearing comfort

  • very sustainable model, spare parts are readily available

Disadvantages

  • none

2. Vic Firth SIH2

The winner in the "shielding from ambient noise" category

The Vic Firth is also a closed headphone and is unbeatable in shielding ambient noise. I use them myself for band rehearsals with a fully miked acoustic drum set, so in a really loud environment. I also use it when recording in the studio. The sound quality can not keep up with the DT-770, but that is not too important for use in loud environments.

Advantages

  • unbeatable shielding from the environment due to the closed design and the high contact pressure

  • good price/performance ratio

Disadvantages

  • Wearing comfort is not so outstanding - after long wearing you feel the high contact pressure

3. Alesis DRP 100

The inexpensive version

The Alesis DRP 100 is also a closed headphone. It is less expensive than the two aforementioned models. In terms of sound quality, it can't keep up with the DT-770, and it doesn't come close to the SIH2 in terms of shielding. But: it is really cheap.

Advantages

  • good price/performance ratio

  • good shielding from the environment due to the closed design and the high contact pressure

Disadvantages

  • Sound quality a bit musty
